Although owning a dog may be a stressful, expensive proposition for some families, studies have shown that owning a dog can actually have a few health benefits.
The most obvious health benefit of owning a dog is taking them for a walk. A National Institute of Health and Welfare study found that dog owners were more likely than other people to do 30 minutes or more exercise at least five days a week.
A 10-month study was also conducted by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, which stated that in just one month of owning a dog the owner established healthier behaviors.
Those who did not have a dog did not engage in any behavioral changes.
This same study also stated that those who participated and owned a dog actually felt happier, healthier and better adjusted than non-owners after answering multiple questions directed at determining their well being, and personality type.
Lastly, a common misconception of owning a dog is because of allergies. Another study done by Journal of Pediatrics found that children who grew up in households with a dog were less likely to develop allergies, such as eczema.
