Many Californians are aware of the dangers of earthquakes but don't take action to protect themselves in case of an emergency. California holds two thirds of the nation's earthquake risk and yet 88% of its residents don't have earthquake insurance.
Imagine yourself in your home and suddenly, the ground starts rumbling and your valuables come crashing down around you. By the time the quake is over, you're surrounded by rubble and your house is in ruins. You've managed to escape unscathed but you are now facing thousands of dollars worth of damage and personal items gone that can never be replaced. Unfortunately, your homeowners' insurance will not cover any of this since the damage resulted from an earthquake.
Earthquake underinsurance not only affects homeowners but it also takes a toll on lending institutions, local and state governments, and the federal budget. Luckily, the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) was established to assist homeowners and business owners in protecting their property while maintaining financial stability for the lending institutions. Californians can purchase earthquake insurance through the CEA or through a licensed insurance agent in their area. Earthquake coverage can be provided through an endorsement to your current homeowners' policy or through a separate policy in addition to your homeowners' policy. To ensure that you're properly covered for the next big quake, please contact Mitchell and Mitchell Insurance Agency and ask for Melissa or Andrew.
